Background

G-Fleet, formerly known as Gauteng Government Motor Transport (GGMT) and established by the Gauteng Provincial Department of Public Transport, Roads and Works, has embarked on a new journey. Not only do we have a new name and a new logo we have our own coporate identity.

We have come a long way from a fleet consisting of one bicycle to our current fleet compliment. Our fleet has evolved so has our business and consequently we need to evolve to keep G-fleet moving. Hence we should keep in mind that 'the only constant in life is change' and that we should not be afraid of change but embrace the possibilities that come with change.

The creation of G-Fleet was no easy task and required a lot of hard work and effort from management, staff and other stakeholders. It is therefore important that we all share in the same vision, mission and values in order to achieve our objectives.

Name of Change Process

During April 2007, the GMT management discussed and decided on a name change for the entity which would be representative of the strategic direction the GMT wishes to pursue.

The marketing department launched an internal competition for GMT staff to recommend a new name and corporate colours for the entity. The competition was launched on Friday, 20 April 2007 and the closing date was Wednesday, 25 April 2007.

The adjudication commenced at 17h30 on 25 April 2007. The panel consisted of five people (four EMC consultants and one GMT staff member).

A total number of fifteen (15) names were counted. Each name was discussed and deliberated upon. The criteria entailed the relevance of the name in relation to the core business of the entity, the ease of pronunciation and the non-association of the name with existing entities. A vote was taken on each of the suggested names. Through a process of elimination three names remained:

  1. Ikwezi Fleet Solutions/Management
  2. Lehae Flee Solutions/Management
  3. g-Fleet

It was also agreed that should the recommended name emanate from one of the senior managers, no prize would be awarded to that particular person. On Thursday, 26 April 2007 the three names were presented to senior management for further deliberation and adjudication. The name finally agreed to by the majority was ‘GFleet’.

On Monday, 30 April 2007, the name ‘GFleet’ was presented to the Sub-committee (Legal and Strategy). Explanation of the process and meaning of the name was given. The chairperson and his advisory member agreed to the name.
